350 King Philip Rd, Wellfleet

The Nemetz family built the Eastwind vacation home in 2012, next to their family's summer home of many years. Its unusual design is an updated version of the family cottage next door which their mother, a Boston architect, designed back in the 1950s, the heyday of architectural experimentation when the boxy Bahaus architecture was introduced in more wooded areas of town. Both homes incorporate the rebellious openness and flat lines of that era but break away with more windows and open decks to embrace the endless waterfront vista.

Eastwind is slightly set back from the shoreline of Wellfleet's Indian Neck, one of the “remote but accessible” mini-peninsulas created by the town's irregular shoreline of estuaries and inlets. It is on the western side of the neck and shares the view out across Wellfleet Harbor to Great Island and beyond. The family does not share the beach access due to recent erosion, but there are two swimming beaches a 5 to 10 minute walk in either direction. The closer beach is at the southern tip of Indian Neck, a semi-private beach belonging to the residents of this part of the Neck. A bit further, but worth the walk, is large delta-shaped beach with a “wading pool” inlet.

This spacious “upside down” house features a large, airy upper living area with windowed walls that merge the inside of the house with the wide outdoors. This living area encompasses a kitchen with a large island breakfast bar, a dining area outfitted with a table that easily seats 12 to 14, and a comfortable living room with a fireplace. Also on the upper level are two bedrooms with a queen bed in each and two full baths.

The lower level has a second living area with a slider to the outdoors, a cozy TV room, and two full bathrooms. The larger bath has a laundry anteroom and a door that opens to the enclosed outdoor shower..Cape Cod's way of leaving salt and sand behind. There is also a large bedroom with a double bed and a trundle bed that opens to two twin beds. A rec room provides the kids with their own get away to read or play without disturbing or being disturbed. The house allows 8 to 10 people. It is centrally air conditioned with a state-of-the-art geothermal system and there are ceiling fans in every bedroom and living area.

In addition to the swimming beaches, there are two neighborhood association tennis courts, which also have basketball hoop. Wandering along quiet dirt roads, the beach and the edge of the marsh under the open sky is a joy itself.
